PhD scholarship: Heritage Tours (Adelaide)

Partnering with the Adelaide Gaol, we are looking for a PhD student to explore a project that looks at tourism of places with challenging histories in respectful and personalised ways using Augmented Reality.

You need to be eligible to complete a PhD to apply and you can find the eligibility requirements link at the bottom of the UniSA Project Page.

Project stipend is $32,500 a year and the project supervisors are Associate Professor Erik Champion, Dr. Susanah Emery and Dr. Michele Jarldorn.

PhD Project Call, no fees

PHD project in Adelaide, no scholarship but no fees, with cool museum partner (https://mod.org.au):

The successful candidate will investigate and design learning kits for museums, communities and small classes to create escape rooms either physical or hybrid, or via a game engine. The kit will provide resources and interaction strategies to help budding escape room designers plan escape rooms for their compatriots, and in doing so learn for themselves how to create tricky interactive puzzles, quizzes and physical riddles based on principles in science, mathematics or history. The instructions will be either via virtual examples through a game engine or game engine exporting to VR, or via online instruction videos using the latest instructional video expertise.

Successful completion of the project will provide you with experience in boardgame, physical escape room, digital game or VR escape room design including scripting, prototyping, digital modelling, and potentially animation experience. As well as a background in human-computer interaction and education. Thus, you will be provided with the skills for a successful and exciting research or industry career in a diverse range of areas.

What you’ll do

In this project-based research degree, you will review, design and evaluate design resources (physical and digital) for the creation of escape rooms by design students.

You will engage and partner with MOD. staff and deploy IVE, VR and AR equipment, as well as run and evaluate escape room design workshops.

Where you’ll be based

You will be based at UniSA Creative, incorporating the South Australian School of Art, which brings together the disciplines of architecture, planning, art and design, journalism, communication and media, film and television and the creative industries to produce flexible graduates with multidisciplinary capabilities. Our research explores the complexities of the world around us. We engage in future-focused, cross-disciplinary research and consultancy to produce inspired solutions that are human-centred and sustainable.

PhD scholarships at UniSA in South Australia

There are two PhD scholarships at the University of South Australia, in Built Environment and Design, that may interest Australian or NZ citizens or Australian permanent residents:

https://www.unisa.edu.au/research/degrees/research-projects/#design-thinking-for-supporting-sustainable-bu

Details of the supervisors are listed against the projects.

No, I am not a supervisor for either, I am currently helping PhD students at my last university submit their theses (two passed so far, three to go!)

To offer a PhD scholarship-supported project at UniSA, I have to propose and have accepted a project, then students can apply. For self-funded PhD study, students can apply straight away.

Visiting Fellowship to Finland

Received a Visiting Fellow invite to the University of Jyväskylä, Finland (member of the Centre of Excellence in Game Culture Studies), very honoured.

I am just wondering if

  • The Australian government will let me leave.
  • Some of this can be done remotely as stretching the funding to cover all the costs (and 2 weeks compulsory hotel stay in quarantine on my return) will be difficult.
  • I can visit colleagues in Europe over the September-October period.
  • There are new and specific Covid-era visa requirements in Finland.

Association with ANU

CDHRE-ANU Centre for Digital Humanities Research today offered me a 5 year honorary professorship. I’d just like to thank them for their support (and thanks to my referees). It is a formal process but not at all painful.

PS No I am not authorised to speak on behalf of ANU. But I get library membership and maybe office space when I visit (The Australian National University in Canberra is a mere 3,718 km from Perth by car). I have been to CDHR and they are great people with verve, it will be a pleasure to collaborate and to promote CDHR.

Oh and Canberra has platypuses in Lake Burley Griffin. Seriously, I think I saw some on my last trip. Maybe it was a puggle.

Unable to take on new students or staff

Hello I am regularly receiving requests for postgraduate supervision or Postdocs. Apart from one current PhD scholarship which was technically closed (but I am still considering applications), for the foreseeable future I am currently unable to take on new students, research staff or postdocs, I am sorry for this. Best of luck with your applications.

Professorial Positions at King’s College London

I don’t normally circulate academic positions but Stuart Dunn asked me and quite frankly these positions sound awesome. I have only visiting Kings College London twice (I think)* and it was before their new offices but I know about their projects and partners and they really are doing interesting things.

Please contact Stuart (details in the URL below) if you want to know more.

Openings for Two New Professorships in “Digital Technology in Culture and Society” and “Critical Digital Practice”

Visiting fellowships in digital humanities/heritage/serious games

I may have the chance to take a short break from Perth and apply for a visiting fellowship or scholarship, preferably in digital humanities, digital heritage (3D), or serious games (history and heritage).

I asked on twitter if there were links, URLs and did not hear back so I had a little search of my one, hope these may help others. I do not necessarily need a salary etc but some of these might include a stipend:
